The 5th Elective General Assembly Meeting of the Union of NGOs of the Islamic World (UNIW) was held, hosted by the Siyasal Foundation.

Attended by delegations and board members from numerous regions of the world, the General Assembly meeting elected the new Secretary General and Deputy Secretaries General, while evaluating new membership applications.

Held at the headquarters of the Siyasal Foundation, the assembly brought together representatives from Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, the Republic of Seychelles, Morocco, Sudan, Iraq, Iran, the UK, Macedonia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Palestine, Lebanon, Somalia, Yemen, and Afghanistan.

Convened on Sunday, June 3, 2012, the assembly commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by the opening address of Secretary General Necmi Sadıkoğlu.

Upon establishing that meeting quorum was met, the elected Presidium Bureau managed the assembly according to the agenda. In this framework, the activity report of the preceding term, the financial audit report, and the proposed activity draft for the upcoming term were presented.

The proposed slate of candidates for Secretary General, Deputy Secretaries General, Council, and Supervisory Board was submitted for voting. In this framework:

Atty. Ali Kurt (Turkey) was elected as UNIW Secretary General; while Atty. Mubarak al-Mutawa (Kuwait) and Dr. Fahri Solak (Turkey) were elected as Deputy Secretaries General. Dr. Solak will also carry out the duties of UNIW Representative for Turkey.

The General Assembly also approved membership applications from organizations that finalized their official documentation. In this context, new members from Palestine, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Indonesia, the USA, Turkey, Sudan, Iraq, Canada, Senegal, Kosovo, Serbia, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Switzerland, Mongolia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Russia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Afghanistan, South Africa, Somalia, Yemen, Jordan, Denmark, Ivory Coast, and Libya joined the UNIW umbrella.

Thus, the number of member countries under UNIW reached 49, while the total number of member organizations surpassed two hundred.
